Summary
Starhaven, a fledgling town isolated in the otherwise uninhabited world of Mirrelm, has fought for 25 years to survive. And now, just as the townsfolk are starting to grow comfortable, a new threat looms on their horizon, bigger than what anyone could hope to protect against. Unwilling to let this story end so soon, the stars come together and create a person that can stand up to this threat.
When the Starsent comes into being, that is all they know - that they are to protect the town of Starhaven. When they meet with the town's leader, their purpose is given direction: hunt down the Great Beasts, so they may be felled before Starhaven is crushed underfoot by them.
They quickly learn that it won't be as easy as just finding and killing them, though. Regardless of how divine their origin, the Great Beasts are still massive behemoths, towering so tall as to rival the mountains, and radiating magic strong enough that it overwhelms any in their presence. But they were created to protect Starhaven, and killing the Great Beasts will fulfill their purpose, so that is what they will do. (Nevermind that they're beginning to befriend the townsfolk, or that they're learning to have fun exploring the wilds of Mirrelm. Nevermind that they may grow to want something outside of their purpose.)
Starhaven's future is pinned on the Starsent alone. They must protect Starhaven. It's all they are for, after all.
The stars are watching with interest.
STF Fun Facts
- The very first thing I knew about STF was the ending! It gripped me so hard that I immediately knew I had to commit to telling this story
- If I had my way, Iliya would be the main character. She's my favorite <3 ("why isn't she the main character then?" Because the narrative calls for the Starsent to be the focus)
- In an early draft of STF, Treble (who is now the blacksmith) was the leader of Starhaven, with Iliya being a nomadic traveler that would occasionally join the Starsent on their journeys into Mirrelm. Iliya took on a much more villain-like role in this draft, being much more explicitly manipulative and selfish.
- There definitely is an alternate world where I landed on an ocean theme instead of space, especially given the amount of ocean-themed songs on my STF playlist!!
